Android TV, phones and tablets: the Aroma IPTV walkthrough
More players understand Xtream Codes here than on any other platform, and the hardware varies just as widely. A decent Android box is the best screen this line-up runs on; a bargain-bin one is the worst.
Have these in front of you
- A phone, a tablet or a box running Android TV
- Your Xtream server address, username and password
- Permission on the device to install an app from outside the Play Store
Allow the install
On Android TV the switch lives under Settings, then Security and Restrictions, then Unknown Sources. Phones and tablets need no menu at all: the browser raises the question itself the moment you open the file you downloaded. One confirmation either way, and nothing about the device behaves differently afterwards.
Install a player
Television boxes take the Downloader route: install it, then type in the short code our apps page lists. Phones and tablets skip that entirely - fetch the installer straight from the same page and open it. Substituting some other Xtream-capable player changes nothing here, because what Aroma sold you is three credentials rather than one particular application.
Add the account
Pick the Xtream Codes option, then type in the host, the username and the password. Ignore the playlist box unless the player flatly rejects an Xtream login. Browsing that way fetches the catalogue piece by piece, which counts for a great deal with both the Arabic blocks and the international ones turned on.
Hide the groups you will never open
Most players allow categories to be hidden. Turning off the groups nobody in the house watches shortens every channel change from then on and makes the programme guide noticeably quicker to load. It is the two minutes that most improves the day-to-day experience and almost nobody spends them.
Test the decoder before you trust the box
Play a 4K stream for two or three minutes and watch for softening on fast motion. A box without hardware decoding for H.265 looks fine for thirty seconds and then degrades as it warms, because the work has fallen back onto the processor. That symptom is regularly reported as a network problem and it is not one.
Quirks of this platform
- Plug into Ethernet whenever the box offers a socket. More ruined evenings trace back to Wi-Fi than to anything else on this list.
- Keep a player configured on a phone purely for testing. Switching that phone to mobile data settles the is-it-me-or-the-line question in about a minute.
- Boxes sold with a player already loaded are usually running an old build of it. Install a current one yourself and ignore what came in the box.
